Work on Nuneaton’s new landmark hotel is set to start in the summer.
If a planning application is given the green light, the new hotel on the former Co-op car park on Abbey Street will start going up in a matter of months.
That is according to a Warwickshire County Council ‘Warwickshire Towns Update 2021’ report due to be discussed next week.
It states: “Subject to planning it is anticipated that works on site will start Summer 2021.”
The plan as well as the wider report will be discussed at communities overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Wednesday (February 17).
As reported in our newsletter the planning application for the hotel, which kick-starts the huge Abbey Street regeneration scheme, has now been officially submitted.
More than 30 documents are on the online planning application which include the CGIs of the venue.
Extra detail has also been made available in the design and access statement.
The design plans explain four options were looked at for the layout of the hotel and that ‘option 4’ is the preferred – which is in an ‘L shape with the corner facing the former Ritz cinema.
The upper levels will be dominated by guest rooms with what has been described as a ‘classic central corridor’ arrangement.
There would be 145 rooms of standard double, accessible and standard double with links to accessible.
There would also be a fitness suite on Level 1.
It is proposed that the building is split into three areas – namely public and back of house areas on the ground floor, guest rooms on upper levels and an area for building services plant associated with the operation of the hotel on the roof.
The main body of the building will be built using red multi-tone brickwork, characteristic within the town centre, and the ground floor will be set back and fully glazed.
There will be tree planting around the building with wider pavements and taxi drop-off points.
Wider regeneration
The council has previously revealed an eight point plan of what it would like the regenerated Abbey Street area to look like.
Within this are plans for a five screen cinema as well as a multi-storey car park on the Abbey Street car park site, as well as proposals for a food hall, shops and public plaza for part of the fomrmer Co-op building.
The Abbey Street redevelopment forms part of the huge Transforming Nuneaton programme and is being championed by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council as well as Warwickshire County Council
A target decision date has been set for April 26.
