What Nottingham thinks of the worst hotel chain in the UK

The Britannia Hotel has been voted the worst hotel chain in the UK. This is the ninth year in a row that it has been voted the worst.

Consumer watchdog Which? did a survey of 2,603 hotel guests over 15 months to October 2021. The reviewers left the Britannia Hotel at the bottom of the list of 24 other hotel chains.

In Nottingham, Britannia Hotel is on Maid Marian Way and people in the city centre told Nottinghamshire Live what they thought about the hotel chain. Tom Heafford, 40, owner of Jack Craggs, which is a barber shop in St James’s Street, says that the hotel chain being the lowest doesn’t surprise him.

Mr Heafford said: “It doesn’t shock me – it doesn’t have the best reputation. The Government is using it to put the less fortunate in it. Which says a lot that the rooms aren’t being filled. It’s a shame because it’s a big hotel and would be nice. But it’s cheap isn’t it – it might be the worst but you get what you pay for.”

Samantha Eves, who is 54 years old and a cleaner from The Meadows, told Nottinghamshire Live the hotel has a bad reputation. She said: “I’ve never been in it. It just looks like an eyesore and dirty. It’s not good at all – it’s reputation.”

Reviewers on TripAdvisor gave the Nottingham Britannia Hotel an overall rating of poor 2.0. With one reviewer saying: “Whole place needed ripping out and modernising. Walls had brown stains on. Feel like I need to shower as soon as I get home. Good central location. Constant smell of cigarette smoke. Whole place is just dingy and shabby. Wouldn’t recommend. Could get a premier inn for the same price!”

Bayram Demirci, 48, a partner in Cod Fish and Chips on St James’s Street, says during the summer he often sees people staying at the chain in Nottingham. Mr Demirci said: “This hotel there’s all the refugees – the Government is trying to look after people.

“In this hotel in the summer time people come and stay in the hotel – every summer by the castle. It shocks me – for more than three years people keep coming.”

The Which? reviewers rated the hotel chain one star out of five for bathrooms, and two stars for seven other categories such as cleanliness, customer service and value for money. Britannia Hotel has been approached by Nottinghamshire Live for a comment.
