CHICAGO (CBS) — A chain and padlock now block the entrance to the Raffaello Hotel in Streeterville, as it is shut down throughout the pandemic.

But for the cafe connected to that hotel, the owner told CBS 2’s Jermont Terry the locked door is a protection issue and much more.

At Pelago Ristorante, 209 E. Delaware Pl., the tables are established and reservations are coming in once again for indoor eating.

“You know pair of weeks in the past we went back again to open up at 25 per cent, every person was very delighted,” said owner Mauro Mafrici. “We introduced back again staff.”

Nonetheless when the doorways to the cafe opened, there is 1 door that Mafrici could not walk by means of. That would be that lodge door with the padlock on it.

“It’s essential for security, but this is my main entrance for incapacity and handicapped doorway,” Mafrici claimed.

The restaurant is related to the Raffaello Lodge, and the doorways getting shut is a issue for the restaurant.

“The individuals, when they go out the door, they will have to go to the toilet,” Mafrici said.

Which is suitable – the restaurant’s restrooms are in the hotel foyer. So despite the hotel staying closed, Mafrici’s customers make use of that spot – together with that door with the padlock.

“When it is persons in the developing, it is not meant to be chained,” Mafrici explained.

That is what a own inspector set in crafting. And when Mafrici termed a Chicago Fireplace Division inspector, he figured out the doorways are supposed to stay open all through organization hours.

“They’re intended to place security – anything they want – but not go away it like that,” Mafrici reported.

So as it stands, each day at 5 p.m., the resort normally takes the chain and padlock off the doorways so they can open. Mafrici mentioned it is his handicapped entrance to the restaurant – and even while the chains and padlock are off the doors for four several hours, he claims that is not sufficient.

“The moment we occur to perform, they are meant to be open up,” he stated. “This should really be the option, or they want to determine out a thing else.”

The cafe has a separate slim entrance walkway, and the lodge told CBS 2 the padlocked doorways have no impression on the restaurant:

“The lodge Raffaello is at this time shut. This has no influence on the functions for the Cafe Pelago, which is owned and operated independently from the resort. The hotel is hoping to be capable to re-open up once again in the summer time. We searching forward to welcoming our friends back.”

The basic supervisor of the lodge said doorways will remain as they are right until the hotel reopens.

Right up until then, Mafrici worries about his elderly shoppers.

“And some people today with the wheelchair – I’m involved about that one particular human being with or without the need of chair can occur into the restaurant,” he reported.
